Do depressed people get a lot of MRIs or something because apparently it alleviates depression, sort of, I guess….

Here is an article on this latest discovery….. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=do-mris-treat-depression

Magnetic Resonance imaging is usually used for finding cancer, looking at the brain and other organs. It does so by the machine itself being a giant round hollow magnet and the magnetic field it produces, is used to align the magnetization of some atomic nuclei in the body. (wtf) Radio waves are used alter the alignment of this magnetization. This causes the nuclei to produce a rotating magnetic field detectable by the scanner—and this information is recorded to construct an image of the scanned area of the body. I got that from wikipedia.

I am going to memorize it and convince people I am a doctor. YAY.

I am not going to write much more about it because I found an article that explains it really well.
An interesting point that I immediately thought of when I read this was the whole “TMS” or Transcranial magnetic stimulation which uses magnetic stimulation on the brain to help treat depression. I know a hospital that actually has one of these expensive machines. Here is an article on it: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=transcranial-magnetic-stimulation-rtms

P.S. Mad Men had a girl that received ECT. I love it when they incorporate people with mental illness into shows. It gets the world exposed and talking about!
